Global Media Intelligence 2021: Indonesia

Noteworthy in 2021

Smartphones rule in Indonesia, with PCs a firm second. Most other digital devices have relatively little traction.

  • PC penetration among internet users ages 16 to 64 declined to 70.3% between H1 2020 and H1 2021—down by about 4 percentage points. Tablets have always been rather uncommon in Indonesia, and ownership fell further this year, to 16.8%.
  • By contrast, smartphones have been essentially universal for several years. As of H1 2021, 98.1% of surveyed internet users owned one. Penetration of feature phones continued to decline, dropping to 13.9%, though these models play a more significant role in Indonesia than in many other markets.
  • Given smartphones’ ubiquity, it’s not surprising that time spent per day with mobile devices passed the 5-hour mark this year. Meanwhile, desktops, laptops, and tablets claimed 3:58. Both figures rose by a few minutes from H1 2020.
