Global Media Intelligence 2021: Argentina

Noteworthy in 2021

Smartphone ownership is now effectively ubiquitous. Smart TVs also posted significant gains.

  • In H1 2021, for the first time, more than 98% of Argentina’s internet users ages 16 to 64 owned a smartphone. Respondents ages 45 to 54 had the highest ownership, at 98.8%.
  • Smart TV penetration also passed a milestone in H1 2021, rising just beyond 60%. It’s notable that ownership fell by more than 4 percentage points among 16- to 24-year-olds but rose among almost all older groups.
  • By contrast, penetration of desktops/laptops was unchanged year over year, at 78.9%. As in H1 2020, males were more likely to own a PC than females, at 81.1% versus 76.6%. Moreover, ownership still correlated directly with rising age and affluence, though slight changes were seen in every age and income group. Fully 86.2% of respondents ages 55 to 64 owned a desktop or laptop, as did 88.3% of respondents in high-income households. Meanwhile, tablet ownership continued to gradually slide, from 39.4% last year to 37.5% in H1 2021. Penetration grew marginally among internet users ages 35 to 44 and 55 to 64, but it shrank in other age groups.
