TV productions surged in the past decade, but 2023 may look different

There were 559 original scripted TV series made in the US in 2021, according to FX Networks. That’s more than twice the number made a decade prior.

Beyond the chart: Content production has grown alongside the rise of streaming, but it will flatten out in 2023, our senior analyst Ross Benes predicts. US streaming services face mounting debt and slowing subscriber growth after investing billions into originals in order to boost sign-ups.

This week, HBO Max made headlines by pulling “Westworld” and other HBO originals from the platform. It’s the latest move by Warner Bros. Discovery to cut expenses such as, in this case, residuals owed to cast and crew.
