Generative AI funding exploded over the past 2 years

US venture capital funding of generative AI was up 27% year over year in 2022, hitting $1.4 billion, according to PitchBook. That money, however, was spread among fewer deals—78 last year compared with 85 in 2021. Nonetheless, it represents a massive increase from 2020, when funding totaled $200 million.

Beyond the chart: Generative AI is the buzziest topic in tech right now, stealing the spotlight from nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse. The ChatGPT tool, in particular, drew much discussion at CES earlier this month.

For marketers, it’s not so much a question of if generative AI will change workflows, but when—and how. Expect to see more personalization, image generation, and marketing text coming from AI. But tread with caution: We still don’t know how Google Search will react to AI-generated content, or how regulators will react to the tech’s bias and piracy issues.
