Communication is top use case for genAI at work

Key stat: Over three-quarters (76%) of US adults have used generative AI (genAI) for communications or writing tasks at work, according to an October 2024 survey from Google and Ipsos.

Beyond the chart:

  • There will be 50.4 million users of genAI at work this year, according to our June 2024 forecast.
  • 72% of US business leaders used genAI for work in 2024, with purchasing/procurement, product development/engineering, and finance/accounting functions leading in use, according to November 2024 data from the Wharton School of Business and GBK Collective.

Methodology: Data is from the January 2025 Google and Ipsos report titled "Our Life With AI: From innovation to application." 21,043 adults ages 18+ worldwide were surveyed online during September 17-October 8, 2024. The survey was conducted in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the UK, and the US, with approximately 1,000 respondents per country. The credibility interval for each country except the US is +/- 3.8 percentage points; these were non-probability surveys. As the US survey was probability-based, it has a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points.
