Theater chains focus on tech and luxury upgrades to stay competitive in streaming era

The news: The largest theater chains in the US and Canada, including AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, and Cinemark, will invest more than $2.2 billion in upgrades over the next three years.

  • These overhauls will affect more than 21,000 screens, representing 67% of North American box office sales, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO).
  • The investment will focus on improving sound and projection technology, seating, air conditioning, and food and beverage options. In select locations, theaters will also add entertainment features like arcades, bowling, pickleball, and ziplines.
