Texas sues TikTok over children’s privacy laws

The news: Texas filed a lawsuit against TikTok that states that the short-form video app illegally sold and shared minors’ personal data—a violation of the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act, as well as the Deceptive Trade Practices Act (DTPA).

This is the latest setback for TikTok in its ongoing trial in which it’s fighting a law signed by President Joe Biden that requires owner ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US company by January or be banned.

Social gathering: Like many other social media companies, TikTok collects and stores usernames, ages, contact info, addresses, locations, IP addresses, and device and carrier data.
