Spotify’s AI-powered playlist tool uses smartphones to boost Premium engagement

The news: Spotify launched an AI tool that lets users create music playlists by typing unique prompts, such as “upbeat pop for summer vacation” or “romantic date night music.” 

• The tailored playlist feature is now available for Premium subscribers on iOS and Android devices in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.
• This rollout follows an initial launch in the UK and Australia, where subscribers have created “millions of playlists that they keep coming back to,” per Spotify. 

Spotify said that users can even reference things like movie characters, colors, and emojis. Users can ask for specific genres and themes and give feedback on what the AI outputs, such as asking for less of a certain artist’s content.
