Most Humana members will be enrolled in lower rated Medicare Advantage plans

The news: The number of Humana members enrolled in top-rated Medicare Advantage (MA) plans is expected to plunge next year, potentially having a significant impact on the health insurer’s bottom line.

Humana acknowledged in a securities filing that based on preliminary federal government data, just 25% of its members will be enrolled in MA plans rated 4 stars and above next year—down from 94% in 2024.

  • For context, MA plans with 4 or 5 stars receive bonus payments from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Ratings are based on a range of quality and member satisfaction measures. They’re also intended to help members compare plans.
