More than 20% of US adults get news from influencers

The news: Young US adults are increasingly getting news from influencers who are overwhelmingly male and tend to lean right politically, according to a study from Pew Research.

By the numbers: Just over 1in 5 US adults (21%) say they regularly get news from influencers. The rate is significantly higher for adults under 30, at 37%. Influencer news consumption appears to be bipartisan: 21% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats say influencers are a news source.

  • However, news influencers tend to lean right in the political spectrum. Twenty-seven percent identify as Republican, versus 21% as Democrat. Sixty-three percent of news influencers are men.
