Meta opens Marketplace up to EU classifieds ad sellers

The news: Meta opened up Facebook Marketplace to third-party classified ad sellers in the EU. The move stems from a November European Commission mandate (and fine of nearly €800 million) that prevents the company from tying its Marketplace classified ads business to Facebook.

  • Previously, companies that wanted to buy ads on Marketplace had to commit some amount of spending to Facebook.
  • While the change will likely result in less spending on Facebook as a result, Meta will still be able to control Marketplace ad prices.
