Meta, Apple fined a collective €700 million for violating DMA

The news: Meta and Apple have become the first companies fined for violating the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), with Meta receiving a €200 million (USD $216 million) fine and Apple receiving a €500 million ($541 million) fine.

• Apple’s fines result from breaching app store regulations, with the European Commission claiming that the App Store’s “anti-steering” practices did not comply with DMA antitrust rules. Meta was fined for charges regarding its ‘pay or consent’ ad model, which requires EU users to pay for access to ad-free versions of Instagram and Facebook.
• Apple was also issued a cease-and-desist order that will require the company to make more product changes by late June. Failure to comply could lead the Commission to fine Apple for every additional day the law is breached.
