Mastercard’s ID verification pilot makes buying age-restricted items easier

The news: Mastercard is testing its Identity Attribute Verification service throughout Europe, per a press release.

  • The service lets merchants confirm cardholders’ date of birth and address using data from their card issuer.
  • That means customers can complete age-restricted purchases online without the friction of uploading an ID.

Mastercard will expand the service to more markets in 2025.

Why it matters: In addition to bringing merchants added security and mitigating fraudulent transactions, Identity Attribute Verification can make buying age-restricted items online easier.
