GenAI in search: ChatGPT’s new feature takes aim at Google’s market share

The news: ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers now have access to ChatGPT with search, a new real-time web search feature, potentially positioning the generative AI (genAI) chatbot as a competitor in the search and related advertising space.

OpenAI, which has more than 1 million paid users, plans to expand search access to free users in the coming months. It’s looking to challenge Google and its 90.5% market share in search volume worldwide.

How it works: The feature allows ChatGPT to access current data such as news, weather, and stock prices. It’s a major upgrade from its previous limit of October 2023 training data, per MIT Technology Review.
