While foreign automakers’ sales accelerated in Q1, they’re likely to stall in the months ahead

The trend: Several major foreign automakers posted strong US sales growth in Q1, with March driving much of the momentum as consumers rushed to purchase vehicles before 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts took effect.

  • Honda’s sales jumped 13% YoY in March, while Nissan and Toyota saw gains of 10% and 8%, respectively.
  • Although Hyundai didn’t break out North American figures in its Q1 report, the company cited “robust sales” in the region—underscoring sustained demand thanks in part to its strong portfolio of hybrid and electric vehicles.
