Character AI’s personas spark a new tech-ethics clash

The news: Character AI, a Google-backed AI chatbot creation platform, was used to make AI personas of deceased and living people without consent. It’s the latest example of genAI services appropriating voice likenesses and images. 

AI companies hungry for training data could be skirting ethics and consent laws while they accelerate product and service expansion. 

The incident surfaced when the father of a dead woman found out her internet presence had been used to create a “friendly AI character” chatbot, per Wired
