Apple will reuse Maps data to train AI models

The news: As resources for model training dwindle, Apple is pulling data from Apple Maps to improve and train its AI products.

Starting this month, Apple will use images captured by Look Around—its version of Google Street View—to train image-recognition, creation, and enhancement models. Look Around photos will also be used to improve Apple Maps and the algorithms it uses to blur faces or license plates.

Apple creates Look Around content from vehicle and pedestrian surveys, which are conducted with cars or pedestrian employees equipped with cameras. Earlier this month, Apple launched an app called Surveyor that lets users submit their own photos.
