The allegation: Online marketplaces including Amazon, Temu, and Shein are selling toys that fail to meet EU safety standards, according to an investigation by Toy Industries of Europe (TIE)—an organization that represents toy manufacturers in the EU and UK.
- 80% of the over 100 products TIE purchased as part of its investigation were unsafe, with some having magnets capable of puncturing children’s intestines if swallowed and others containing high levels of toxic chemicals.
- The toys were purchased from third-party sellers across 10 marketplaces: the aforementioned three, as well as AliExpress, Wish, Allegro, Bol, Cdiscount, Fruugo, and Light In The Box.
