Amazon and Flipkart’s strong start to India’s festive season bodes well for Diwali sales

The early results: India’s retail industry delivered a strong start to the 2024 festive season, which stretches from late September through November 3.

  • From September 26 to September 29, gross merchandise volume was up 24% year over year, and order volume was up 20% YoY, per Unicommerce data. Makeup sales jumped 54% YoY, and fashion and accessories sales rose 32% YoY.
  • Flipkart’s flagship event, The Big Billion Days—which launched September 27—attracted more than 330 million user visits across its Early Access phase and Day 1.
